The Reaney family combined the manufacture of pen and pocket knives with the running of beer houses in Shalesmoor. Thomas and George Reaney were listed in 1833 in Matthew Street. Thomas (born in Attercliffe) was listed alone thereafter. In 1849, he advertised as a spring knife manufacturer from Dunfields; and was also operating a beer house in Matthew Street. He died there on 27 July 1859, aged 53, and was described in the General Cemetery register as a beer house keeper. His wife, Barbara, died on 29 September 1859, aged 52. The assets were acquired by Joseph Twigg and John Tadwell (trading as Twigg & Tadwell), who advertised as spring knife makers in Dun Lane in 1864, but had ceased business by 1868.
