The Reaney family combined the manufacture of pen and pocket knives with the running of beer houses in Shalesmoor. Thomas and George Reaney were listed in 1833 in Matthew Street. Thomas (born in Attercliffe) was listed alone thereafter. In 1849, he advertised as a spring knife manufacturer from Dunfields; and was also operating a beer house in Matthew Street. He died there on 27 July 1859, aged 53, and was described in the General Cemetery register as a beer house keeper. His wife, Barbara, died....
