This cutler was born in Sheffield on 25 February 1812, the son of George (a hatter) and Ann. George Sen. (who died in 1853, aged 68) worked in Silver Street, where his son was listed in 1845 as a spring knife manufacturer. In the Census (1851), George employed six men and was living in Silver Street with his wife, Mary (who had been born in Thorne, Yorkshire). Ibbotson appeared in the directory (1854) in Dixon’s Yard, Silver Street, but apparently died in that year. Mary continued to live in Silver Street and described herself as a cutlery manufacturer in directories and the Census. In 1856. she was charged with stealing £35-worth of spring knives from George Wostenholm and was sentenced to nine months hard labour (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 27 December 1856, 17 January 1857). In 1862, she was listed as a pen and pocket knife manufacturer at Dixon’s Yard, Silver Street. She later married James Beal and died on 2 July 1888, aged 68. She was buried in the General Cemetery.
