This cutler was born in Sheffield on 25 February 1812, the son of George (a hatter) and Ann. George Sen. (who died in 1853, aged 68) worked in Silver Street, where his son was listed in 1845 as a spring knife manufacturer. In the Census (1851), George employed six men and was living in Silver Street with his wife, Mary (who had been born in Thorne, Yorkshire).
