In the Census of 1851, Joseph Gill (c.1812-1878) was enumerated as spring knife warehouseman, working in Sheaf Gardens. By 1868, he was listed in a directory as a manufacturer of sportsman’s, dagger, and Bowie knives. In the Census (1871), he described himself as a ‘cutlery merchant’. Bowies knives stamped with his name and the address Parliament Hill have survived in the hands of collectors. By 1876, he appears to have retired. He died at 14 Egerton Street on 7 November 1878, ....
