Benjamin Gill was apparently baptised in Sheffield on 19 March 1786, the son of Samuel (a cutler) and Ann. He was listed in 1825 as a pocket, lock, and sneck knife manufacturer in Broad Lane. After about 1833, he lived and worked in Garden Street, where he made spring knives and ‘self-defence’ knives, daggers, and Spanish dirks.
