Herbert Youle (1844-1926) was a cutlery manufacturer born at Lambhill in the Richmond/Handsworth area of the city in 1844. He was the son of Henry Youle (1810-1877) who is listed in the 1851 census as a cutler and butcher. Herbert married Eva Gillott (1854-1935) in 1873.
In 1900 Herbert is listed as an elector in the St Peter’s Ward of the city, qualified by having a 25% share in the freehold of 23-29 Burgess Street; he was living at 235 Broomhall Street at the time. The other shares in the property were held by his younger brothers, Ernest Youle, Henry Youle and John Hutchinson Youle.
By 1911 Herbert and Eva were living at 8 Carterknowle Road with their son Herbert Vincent Youle (1886-?), a sister Anne Youle and a younger brother John Hutchinson Youle (1849-1914). The latter was listed as a retired cutlery manufacturer at that time and was to eventually die 3 years later in South Africa.
Herbert Youle & Co was listed at 39 Holly Lane as manufacturing table knives in White's Directory of Sheffield 1919-20.
Herbert Youle died on 19 April 1926 at 54 Todwick Road, Woodseats leaving £271. He is buried in the General Cemetery.
