Alfred Owen (c.1822-1880) was a scissors grinder, but details on his early life are scarce. He probably worked for Steer & Webster and was likely one of the group of scissors grinders, who created a disturbance at William Steer’s factory in a labour dispute (Sheffield Independent, 22 June 1844). Owen’s first appearance in a directory was in 1852, when he was a partner in Newbould, Owen & Gill, a scissors manufacturer at Allen Street. His partners were George Newbould and John Gill. In 1853, this arrangement was dissolved. By 1856, Owen & Webster was active as a scissors manufacturer at Jericho Street. Owen’s partner was John Webster, who lived at Court 1, Radford Street. But this partnership had ended by 1860. Alfred Owen continued to work as a scissors grinder and in 1871 was living at Neepsend Lane. He died in 1880, aged 58, at Parkwood Springs. He was buried at Wardsend Cemetery on 31 March.
