James Winter was apparently born in Sheffield in 1816, the son of John (a cutler) and Margaret. He was working by 1849 as a spring-knife cutler in Furnace Hill. The Census (1851) showed that he employed 25 men. However, Winter’s career was cut short: he died on 12 October 1854, aged 39, and was buried in the General Cemetery. His wife, Mary Ann, and son James continued the business for a time in Garden Street. Eight men were employed by the Winters in 1861. However, soon after Mary Ann’s death on 17 October 1861, aged 45, the enterprise ceased trading.
