William Wild was born on 15 January 1810, the son of John (a cutler) and his wife, Hannah. By 1851, he was established in Shoreham Street as a spring-knife manufacturer, employing 18 men. By 1856, he had moved to Crescent Works at 21 Carver Street, which had a steam engine, grinding troughs, and warehouse (Sheffield Independent, 6 July 1869). He died at his residence at Crescent Works on 1 February 1869 and was buried in an unconsecrated grave in the General Cemetery. He left under £5,000.
