Henry Wingfield was listed in White's 1919-20 Directory at 66 Upper St Philip's Road
Henry Wingfield is one of a large family of Wingfields going back to at least mid 17th century. The earliest known ancestor is William (1656-?) who married Alice (1660-?) probably on 1 August 1677 in Sutton cum Duckmanton, Derbyshire [this assumes the IGI reference to Sutton, Cambridgeshire is an error]. Only the more recent family members were Sheffield cutlers.
William’s son Francis (1696-?) married Sarah Clark of Scortcliffe on 18 June 1726, at Ault Hucknall.
Francis’ son Thomas (1732-?) married firstly Sarah Strafford on 22 April 1751 at) Heath near Chesterfield and later Betty Savewell or Severell on 14 August 1757 at Sutton cum Duckmanton.
Thomas (and Betty)’s son Joseph (1761-1850) married Jane Smith on 1 Aug 1785, at Sheffield Cathedral. Joseph is the first one for which his occupation is known, and he is recorded as a case maker, a sort of carpenter.
Joseph’s son Charles (1791-1869) married Susannah Rogerson on 26 August 1819 in Sheffield Cathedral. Charles was also baptised in Sheffield Cathedral on 14 May 1790. Charles Wingfield appears in the 1841 census, with the occupation pork butcher. He was living with his father Joseph at the time in Division Street, Sheffield. In 1851, Charles is a cab proprietor.
Charles (snr) and Susannah had a son, also Charles (1833-1891) who was baptised in Sheffield Cathedral in 1833 and married Eliza Littlewood on 17 Oct 1852.
Charles (jnr) (1864-?) had a son Henry (1864-?); the one listed in White’s Directory. He married Eleanor Clarke in Oct-Dec 1910 (BMD Eccelsall 9c 429)
From 1851 onwards (Charles jnr), census returns record all the male Wingfields as Table knife hafters of table knife cutlers, suggesting a family business.
We have no example of their knives in our Collection. If you have any information, please share it with us via enquiries@hawleytoolcollection.com.
