Samuel Wright (1877-1962) was born in Sheffield. He was the son of Samuel Wright (1854-1923) and Eliza née Maycock. His father was a silver cutler, who died in Rockingham Lane on 1 August 1923, leaving £227. By 1900, Sam Jun. was in business as a fish-knife cutler in Holly Street. In about 1930, he moved to Cambridge Street. International Cutler (Autumn 1951), described S. Wright & Co as a ‘Real Family Business’. Sam was still at work and helped by his sisters Annie (whose married name was Lee) and Eliza (married name Kuren). Sam’s sons (Sam, Bob, Harry, and Wilf) were involved and several nephews. The journal described Sam as the ‘fish eater king’ and noted that he had started work aged 11 and once worked 6.00 am-8.00 pm (though he had cut these hours to 7.00 am to 5.00 pm!) International Cutler, which reported some of the family details inaccurately, showed this photograph of Sam with Eliza (information courtesy of Eileen Townend). By 1953, the business had become S. Wright & Co (Cutlers) Ltd. Sam Wright of High Storrs Road, Ranmoor, died at The Mews, Carsick Grange, on 25 August 1962. He left £2,862. The Wrights continued the business until it was wound up in 1972.
