Spencer and Crossland declared bankrupt, London Gazette, 6 May 1828
William Spencer (c.1795-1852) was a table knife manufacturer, who apparently began work in Allen Street (a cutler plying that trade was listed by 1818). In 1825, Joseph Crossland, a manufacturer of table knives, razors, and general dealer in cutlery was listed at the same Allen Street address as Spencer (No. 81). Spencer & Crossland formed a partnership as a general merchant and factor, which had a London office in Fenchurch Street. In 1828, Spencer & Crossland appeared in the local directory, but became insolvent in the same year. William Spencer continued to trade as a table knife manufacturer in Allen Street. In the Census (1851), he was living in Wentworth Street. In the following year, he was listed in a directory as a table knife manufacturer in Pea Croft and a hosier in West Street. He died at West Street on 14 August 1852, aged 57, and was buried in the General Cemetery.
