Thomas Gillott Rowland was born 12th December 1858 in Sheffield. He was the son of Thomas and Mary (née Gillott) Rowland.
Thomas came from five previous generations of Table Knife Cutlers, dating back to Edward Rowland born in 1707, Jonathan born 1736, Robert born 1783, Thomas born 1808 (grandfather), and Thomas born 1836 (father).
The occupation of Thomas Gillott Rowland in 1881 was Table Knife Cutler and by 1901 he was described as Cutlery Manufacturer Manager. In 1911 his occupation was Cutlery Plate Manufacturer Manager. We know that T. G. Rowland was the manager at H. G. Long & Co. for a number of years until he retired.
Thomas retired in 1923 and set up a small company under the name T. G. Rowland.
This is an extract from the memoires of Donald Thompson (1921-2000), grandson of T. G. Rowland.
"My grandfather's occupation was that of cutler and he was the manager of a Sheffield firm of Cutlery Manufacturers called H. G. Long and company until he retired , when he carried on a small business of his own in cutlery, working from his home in Walton Road. He bought items of cutlery from small cutlery workers in Sheffield, had them 'worked up' into the finished article by other cutlers and posted them to individuals who wrote to him and placed orders."
Thomas Gillott Rowland died on 13th January 1950 and is buried in Fulwood Churchyard.
