We believe this knife was made in Sheffield for Phins Ltd, an ironmonger that was founded in Dundee at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Phins was established in 1902 by John Phin (later Sir John Phin and Lord Provost of Dundee, 1881 - 1955), who was born in Dundee, the son of David Napier Phin and Ann Dandson. Sir John retired in 1925 and the business was passed on to Phins Ltd, a newly-formed, private limited company. At that point, it was described as a furnisher and general ironmonger.
The company was eventually acquired by Dundee Corporation in the early 1960s and its premises in Nethergate were demolished to make way for the Overgate shopping centre.
We have not been able to identify the manufacturer so far. If you have any information about the knife or the maker, please share it with us via enquiries@hawleytoolcollection.com
