Advertisment from 1858
George Newbould was born in Sheffield on 13 June 1818, the son of William, a cutler, and his wife, Frances. He was first associated with Newbould Bros.
In 1858, George Newbould advertised in a Birmingham directory from Dixon Works in Arundel Street, as a manufacturer of secure horn handle table cutlery and ‘all kinds of cutlery for home and export’. In 1861, he employed four men and two women. He apparently specialised in Bowie knives, as he appeared in a directory listing (1865) of Bowie makers.
In 1868, George Newbould, table knife manufacturer, was based in Pond Street, with a house in Shrewsbury Road. The directory of 1871 described him as a manufacturer of ‘every description of table cutlery, pen, pocket, pruning, and dagger knives, table and butchers’ steels, etc.’, at Dixon Works in Pond Street. Newbould’s workshops employed ten workers and an errand boy. He lived at Machon Bank View, Herbert Road, in Nether Edge.
George Newbould, ‘gentleman’, Herbert Road, died on 16 January 1877, aged 58. He was buried in the General Cemetery, leaving under £6,000. John Mearbeck became his ‘successor’. His son-in-law was Maurice J. Dodworth (see Matthew Dodworth & Sons).
