Benjamin Martin (c. 1783-1853) was born at Rotherham. He partnered Samuel Hoyland until 1814 as a manufacturer of pocket knives and other cutlery. Benjamin was listed in 1817 as a pocket knife maker in Rockingham Street. In 1820, he registered a silver mark as a plate worker in Laidies Walk, Sheffield Moor. His later address was South Street, where he manufactured pen, pocket, table and silver plated fruit knives. He worked from South Street during the 1830s until at least the mid-1840s. By 1849 his name had disappeared from the ranks of cutlers, but he was listed as a publican at Ben Lomond Tavern in Eyre Street. He died on 24 May 1853, aged 70, and was buried in St Peter’s churchyard.
