George Raynor Thornton Marsden was born in Sheffield on 23 July 1850, the son of George Marsden (see Marsden Bros) and his wife, Mary. Between 1876 and 1879, he was a ‘manufacturer’ of table cutlery, palette, poultry, and oyster knives at Argyle Works, Hollis Croft. An advertisement in 1879 stated that he also sold edge, joiners’, and horticultural tools, and skates; that his firm was founded in 1790; and that his trade mark was ‘PROLIFIC’ (later used by Henry Barnascone). He lived in Collegiate Crescent. His career as a manufacturer (or merchant) was short-lived and he later worked as a traveller. He died at Scarborough on 20 September 1899, aged 49, leaving £15,557.
