This cutler was listed as a table knife manufacturer in Pond Lane in 1787, using a mark that included the letters ‘C’ and ‘W’. William Loy was then partnered by Thomas Bennett in Norfolk Street, but they dissolved their partnership in 1794. William continued to work in Norfolk Street, but died on 12 June 1808. He had lived in Highfield and was buried in Ecclesall churchyard, with the register noting that he was a ‘merchant’. His will was proved in October 1808 at £5,000 (over £300,000 at current prices). His wife was the main legatee, but Loy made bequests to Carver Street Chapel and Sheffield Infirmary. The firm was dissolved, revealing that the partners had included Laurence Potts, Francis Carr, Joseph Parkin, William Parker, and John Wright Clough (Staniforth, Parkin & Co). William Loy was also part of Vickers, Shaw & Co, which manufactured saws.
