This firm appeared in a directory (1911) at Haddon Works, Denby Street, specialising in spring knives and utility knives. The founder was John Unwin James (c.1847-1920), a spring knife maker and hafter, who lived at Myrtle Road, Heeley. His sons were Albert Unwin James and Frederick Unwin James. By 1919, the firm was at Advance Works, Egerton Lane. John U. James died on 20 February 1920, aged 74, leaving £633. His burial was in Norton. In 1924, the firm became ‘Ltd’ (capital £3,000) under his sons at Advance Works, Mary Street. James’s began selling stainless table cutlery, such as carving sets. It remained in Mary Street after the Second World War, when it also marketed safety razor blades marked ‘CHIN-CHAT’. In 1961, it was in Broad Lane, but was defunct by the early 1970s.
