The Jewel Razor Co was started in 1929 by Arnold Abbott (1910-1990), though it was registered under his father’s name (John Abbott). Arnold (who was born in Castleton, Derbyshire) had worked for Nelson Tool Co and Darwins. He began making safety razors, using German materials and machines, in an upstairs room at a house in Lescar Lane. In 1934, Jewel Razor Co moved to Hawksley Avenue, Owlerton; and in 1937 became ‘Ltd’ (capital £5,000). After the War, Abbott supplied Harrison Fisher and in about 1960 became an early adopter of stainless steel blades (A. Abbott, diary notes, 1987, Hawley Collection). Trade marks included ‘TRIX’, ‘MINX’, ‘PEAK’, and ‘JEWEL’. Arnold Abbott sold the business in 1965. He died on 19 July 1990, aged 80, leaving £131,451. His old firm became Jewel Blade Ltd, which after its takeover by Swann-Morton in 2003 continued in Penistone Road as a maker of razor blades, craft blades, and roofing, and trimming blades.
