Hamilton & Savage was listed in 1841 as a merchant and cutlery dealer. It was operated by Irishman Michael Hamilton from his house in Angel Street and by James Savage in Liverpool. Four years later, Michael Hamilton was a general merchant in the Wicker. Table cutlery was an early speciality. Hamilton advertised in 1860 as ‘late Edward Barber’. He lived at Tapton Ville in Broomhill and died there on 25 June 1862, aged 56, leaving £6,000. John Dignam (d. 1885) bought the stock and operated as Hamilton & Dignam at Sheaf Island Works. In 1865, he was bankrupt, but traded until at least 1871 (when he advertised). He later sold the ‘Edward Barber’ name to E. C. Manico.
