Robert Stanley Hemingway (1890-1967) was born at Norton Lees, Derbyshire, the son of Robert Hemingway, and his wife, Emma. His father was a silversmith’s clerk, then later a ‘silver warehouse manager (white)’. By 1911, when he lived in Lismore Road, Heeley, Robert Jun. was working as a table cutlery assistant manager. He was listed as a manager at the start of the inter-war years, but by 1930 had decided to try his luck as a cutlery manufacturer. He marketed stainless table knives marked ‘R.S. HEMINGWAY’ and ‘FIRTH BREARLEY STAINLESS’. In directories, he used his home address at Charles Ashmore Road, Norton, which suggests that his venture was small-scale. By 1933, he was not listed as a manufacturer. He died on 9 May 1967, aged 77, and left £1,874.
