The Royal cipher ‘Victoria Regina’ suggests that this knife was made before 1901. Identifying the maker is difficult, as an extensive search of Sheffield directories has failed to find Headford & Co. The name has, however, been found on other knives of this era. For example, on a Headford & Co ‘Real Green River Knife’ (which was an American pattern). Perhaps ‘Headford & Co’ was a brand and not a manufacturer’s name. Headford was coincidentally the name of a cutlery manufacturing street in Sheffield.
