James Gledhill (1808-1865) was born in Sheffield, the son of Samuel, a cutler, and his wife, Ann. Between 1837 and 1841, he was listed as a table knife manufacturer in Hollis Croft. After 1849, his works address was No. 261 Solly Street. In 1851 and 1861, when he was enumerated in the Census in Wrexham, he described himself as a merchant. He had retired by 1871. James Gledhill, ‘gentleman’, Parker’s Road, died on 23 June 1885, aged 77. He left £4,000 and was buried in the General Cemetery’s unconsecrated section (apparently, he was a New Connexion Methodist). He was buried alongside the remains of his first wife, Martha (who died in 1852, aged 46, at No. 261 Solly Street); and second wife, Catherine (who died in 1884, aged 64).
