John Gill (c.1824-1898) was born at Thorne, Yorkshire. Little is known about his early life, though by 1851 he was living at Ebenezer Street and working as a scissorsmith. In the following year, he was part of the scissors manufacturer Newbould, Owen & Gill at Allen Street. His partners were George Newbould and Alfred Owen. In 1848, he had married George Newbould’s daughter, Emma (1826-1853). She died on 26 April 1853, aged 26, and later that year Gill married Charlotte Bennett (d.1896). In 1853, Newbould, Owen & Gill disbanded. Gill worked as a scissors manager, until he retired in the 1890s. He died at his home at Blake Street, Upperthorpe, on 21 August 1898, aged 74. He was buried at the General Cemetery. Probate on his estate of £689 was granted to Bradley Nowill and Charles Richard Nowill. Perhaps Gill was a manager at John Nowill & Sons.
