James Gilles was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the son of James and Mary Gilles. By 1841, Mary had been widowed and she was living in Bright Street with her sons, John and William, who were pen knife cutlers. In the Census (1851), John Gilles was a ‘master spring knife cutler’, who was living in Bright Street with his sister (a dress maker). James was also listed in directories as a spring knife manufacturer at that address. He died in Bright Street, Sheffield Moor, on 2 September 1865, aged 53.
