Joseph Gill knife, in the collection of Lawrie Wilson
In the Census of 1851, Joseph Gill (c.1812-1878) was enumerated as spring knife warehouseman, working in Sheaf Gardens. By 1868, he was listed in a directory as a manufacturer of sportsman’s, dagger, and Bowie knives. In the Census (1871), he described himself as a ‘cutlery merchant’. Bowies knives stamped with his name and the address Parliament Hill have survived in the hands of collectors. By 1876, he appears to have retired. He died at 14 Egerton Street on 7 November 1878, aged 66, and was buried in the General Cemetery (his wife, Hannah, had predeceased him in 1872, aged 69). He left under £1,500 to his nephews Henry Gill, Henry Frederick Gill, and Albert Rodgers Gill – who all worked as managers at the Suffolk Works of Thomas Turner & Co.
