A merchant of this name was located in South Street in 1833. In the early 1840s, John Fielding was listed in Suffolk Road, as a merchant and table, pen, pocket knife and scissors manufacturer. He resided in East Bank House. By 1849, Fielding was listed in Leadmill Road as a merchant, razor, and table, pen, pocket, and sportsman’s knife manufacturer. He lived in Nelson Place. After briefly relocating his enterprise to Suffolk Road, by 1854 Fielding was operating from Union Street. Fielding died, aged 58, on 1 December 1860, and was buried in the General Cemetery. The directory of 1861 carried an advertisement for Fielding, but this appears to have been John Fielding Jun. (born c.1833), who advertised in the directory (1859). In the Census (1861), he was enumerated at No. 21 Union Street as a ‘cutlery manufacturer’. A partnership with Henry Horridge ended in 1861. By the end of that decade, he and his wife Emily were fancy goods dealers and they later moved to Scarborough. Fielding had retired by 1891.
