Fischer Brothers trade mark. Image courtesy of Geoff Tweedale
The Fischer brothers, Fritz (born c.1853) and Walther, were rare birds – German cutlery manufacturers in Sheffield. They apparently arrived in about 1878 in their mid-20s and within two years had a trade mark (two men in a boat) and a works address: West Street and Charlotte Street. They were merchants and manufacturers of cutlery, scissors, and shears, and had a factory in Solingen, in Rhenish Prussia. Scissors were their specialty. Fritz seems to have been the more permanent member of the partnership: by 1891 he was living in Beech Hill Road. By 1901 he was naturalised and living as a lodger in Weston Park with the Pearce family, who acted as agents for the company. The firm appears to have become defunct by the First World War, though Fritz was still living in Victoria Street in 1917. His subsequent fate is unknown, but the Fischer mark was owned by Ellin by 1919.
