Thomas Elliott (sometimes spelled ‘Elliot’) was a merchant and table knife manufacturer, who was first listed in Townhead Cross in 1816. The business then moved to Garden Street by the early 1820s (where a Thomas Elliot was also listed as grocer and flour dealer). In 1825, merchants and cutlers Thomas Elliot, Thomas Elliot Jun., and John Elliot dissolved their partnership. ‘Sons’ was dropped from the company name and Thomas Elliott was listed alone as a merchant and manufacturer of table, pen, and pocket knives, razors, scissors, and general dealer in Union Lane. His home address was Gell Street. (Between 1828 and 1837, John and Robert Elliot traded as merchants in similar products in Garden Street. They were active into the 1840s and may have been the sons of Thomas.) Thomas Elliott, merchant, Victoria Street, died on 6 September 1839 after ‘a long and se-vere affliction’, aged 55. He was buried in St George’s churchyard, Portobello.
