Joseph Edley (1856-1934) was born in Sheffield, the son of John Edley, a saw maker, and his wife, Elizabeth. After training as a clerk, he became a button hook manufacturer. In 1893, he was a dressing case maker with H. Frankland Smith as Smith & Edley in West Street (see Royse Bros). This ended in 1899, when he formed J. Edley & Co, a fancy leather goods manufacturer and cutlery factor, Brookhill. This was insolvent by 1909. Joseph was listed as a scissors manufacturer in Court 2, Upper St Philip’s Road, until after the First World War. He apparently retired in the 1920s. He and his wife, Eliza, lived in Melbourne Road. She died on 19 February 1924, leaving £532; Joseph, living in Longfield Road, died on 24 November 1934, aged 78. He left £212. He and Eliza were buried at Walkley. Joseph’s nephew was William A. Edley.
