This cutlery manufacturer in Mary Street was founded in about 1925, after Fred Ellis & Sons filed for bankruptcy. Annie Eliza Ellis was Fred’s wife and presumably her name was chosen instead of his to front the new company. Fred died on 1 September 1935 and was buried at City Road Cemetery.
It is not known how long Annie Eliza was associated with the enterprise, but certainly the business proved long-lived. It was based at Mary Street into the 1930s and 1940s and became ‘Ltd’ in 1950. By the 1970s, the address was Sidney Street.
The company was not apparently dissolved until 2007.
