This firm manufactured silver and metal handles and ferrules for table cutlery. It apparently began as Biggin & Drake, which operated in Rockingham Street in the 1920s and early 1930s. The ‘Biggin’ is not identified in directories, though it may have been Arthur Edwin Biggin. The other partner was Austin Thomas Drake (1878-1956), who was the son of Austin Drake, a silver handle maker, and his wife, Elizabeth. In the 1930s, the firm became Drake & Son, Arundel Street, with the addition of Austin Thomas’s son, Austin Willis Drake (1901-1993). After the Second World War, Drake’s address was Bramall Lane. Austin Thomas Drake died in Sheffield on 15 February 1956, aged 78, leaving £5,992. The firm was still listed in 1981, but was eventually merged into Beatson Drake Ltd.
