Jonathan Dearden was baptised in Sheffield on 28 December 1772, the son of James (a cutler). Leader (1905-06)1 listed a Jonathan, son of James (deceased), who was apprenticed to Jonathan France in 1784. He became a Freeman in 1797. Jonathan Dearden became a table knife manufacturer based at Garden Street and was listed in directories in 1821, 1822, and 1825. Presumably, he had a family connection with John Dearden, the scissors makers. Jonathan died after ‘a long illness’ on 5 February 1929 (Sheffield Independent, 7 February 1829). He was buried at St Paul’s churchyard. Jonathan’s and his wife Mary’s son, Henry James Dearden, was born 31 July 1808. When he married Mrs Mary Daft in 1833, he was described as a table knife manufacturer. He was listed at Wicker Lane in 1837, but by 1841 had become a publican. He later prospered as a brewer. He died at High House, Penistone Road, Owlerton, on 4 July 1875, aged 47. His consecrated burial was at the General Cemetery. He left under £9,000.
