John Coe (1786-1829) was a manufacturer of table knives. He was apparently the son of Joseph, a scissor grinder and soldier, who was apprenticed for seven years in 1800 to Thomas Hattersley (a knife grinder). In 1810, Coe was granted his Freedom by the Company of Cutlers. In 1811, he married Sarah Kay Hobson. He worked initially as a knife grinder, but by 1822 was listed in a directory as a table knife manufacturer at Cotton Mill Row (near Kelham Island). After the mid-1820s, he was at Spring Street. He died ‘rather suddenly’ on 22 March 1829, aged 42, and was described as ‘a man of industrious habits, known probity, and unassuming manners’ (Sheffield Independent, 28 March 1829). His burial was at the parish church (St Peter & St Paul). His son apparently established John Coe & Co.
