Thomas Cawton (1804-1867) was a table knife manufacturer. He was apparently born on 21 September 1804, the son of John (a cutler) and his wife, Cecilea. Thomas was first listed in Broomspring Lane. (John Cawton Jun., table knife manufacturer, Bailey Street: house Charlotte Street, had appeared in the 1833 directory.) In the Census (1851), Thomas was living and working in Radford Street, employing twelve men in table knife manufacture. In 1861, he was in [Broom] Spring Lane. In 1868, he was a manufacturer of table knives and dagger knives in Wellington Street, with a residence in Gloucester Street. His son, John, became a table cutlery manager, but died on 10 September 1873, aged 37. Thomas Cawton, Gloucester Street, died on 11 February 1867, aged 62. His burial (unconsecrated) was in the General Cemetery. He left under £800. His widow, Elizabeth, died in 1882, aged 77. Their other son, Thomas (1839-1907), became a professor of music.
