A razor manufacturer, born in about 1790, Samuel Crookes was listed in the 1825 directory in Broad Lane. By the early 1830s, he had moved to Hollis Croft. His death on 21 December 1840 – when he was aged 50 – was thought notable enough to be recorded in the Sheffield Local Register, following an obituary in The Sheffield Independent, 26 December 1840, which stated that ‘he was greatly esteemed … and much lamented’. He was buried not far from his works in St George’s churchyard, Portobello.
