In the Sheffield directories (1787 and 1797), George Colley was listed as a maker of common scissors at Barker Pool and Fargate. He was probably the scissors maker, who became a Freeman in 1749 (Leader, 1904-06). His trade mark was ‘TAY’. George Colley did not appear in directories after that date, but a scissorsmith of that name was buried at St Paul’s on 21 October 1800. A few years later, scissorsmith George Colley married Mrs Ward at Rotherham (Leeds Mercury, 6 February 1808). Perhaps he was a son or descendant.
