The Cadmans were farmers from Eckington, Derbyshire. During the eighteenth century, several Cadmans became involved in the Sheffield metal trades. John Cadman (c.1778-1845) was a table knife manufacturer, who after 1816 was listed in directories at Lambert Street. He had apparently retired by the 1830s and lived at Cadman’s Place, Bramall Lane. He was living at Bramall Lane in 1841, when he was enumerated in the Census as ‘independent’ (living on his own means). He died on 22 April 1845, ‘after a painful illness’, and was buried at St Peter’s churchyard (Sheffield Independent, 3 May 1845).
