James Benn (bapt.1802-1857) was apparently the son of William (a cutler) and his wife, Mary. James was enumerated in the Census (1841) as a table knife cutler at a pub in Hollis Croft. The directory in 1849 listed him as a table knife manufacturer and victualler of the Cock, Hollis Croft. Thereafter, his workshop was in Bailey Street, which was also his residential address in the year of his death. He died on 27 March 1857, aged 55, and was buried in the General Cemetery. His wife Mary had been buried, aged 38, in Portobello graveyard on 6 September 1843. He may have been related to James Benn.
