Advertisement from Kelly's 1856 Directory
In the Census (1851), Henry Barge (c1822-1889) was enumerated as a cutler in Broad Lane, living with his wife, Emma. Henry had married Emma Rutter, is second wife, on 18 February 1849 at the Cathedral. A directory in 1852 had an advertisement for him in Low Street. (William Barge, a table-knife manufacturer, Pond Street, was also listed in 1822.) Henry’s speciality was spring knives. Listings and advertisements in 1856/59/60 mentioned all kinds of pen and pocket knives, 3- and 4-blade Congress knives, and lock knives. Barge also made Bowie knives. He displayed his products at the Great Exhibition (1851). Barge’s address remained 8 Low Street (South Street), Park, into the early 1860s.
In February 1868 Barge was declared bankrupt albeit he was discharged by April.. The name was listed later at Long Henry Street, then Forge Wheel Lane, Shude Hill. Henry Barge died on 10 June 1889, aged 68 and was buried in City Road Cemetery. His wife, Emma, died at 37 Ball Road, Hillsborough on 10 February 1894 leaving £179 10s 11d to their son Thomas Barge who was identified as a cutlery manufacturer in the National Probate Calendar entry.
