We have been unable to trace the maker of this knife.
There are 2 people of this name in Sheffield in the early 20th century:
- Leonard Burnand, who married Alice Mary Pacey on 3rd April 1915 at Howard Rd Methodist Chapel. His occupation, however, is given as a wire drawer and by 1939 he was living in the Isle of Wight (and still a wire drawer).
- Leonard Burnand, born 20 Dec 1869, the grandson of James Burnand. Leonard died on 22 Sep 1914 on board HMS Cressy, which was sunk by a German submarine in the North Sea. His occupation was either a wheelwright (from his service record) or electrician (from the baptism of his son, William Leonard Burnand in 1905). In any case, he died before the invention of stainless steel. Given that the Burnand family were cutlers, perhaps his name was used by them on some knives as a lasting memorial?
