Thomas Barnes (c.1809-1882) was listed as a pen, pocket, and lock knife manufacturer in Court 29, Solly Street, in 1833. He was living and working in Broomspring Lane by 1841, with his wife Sophia. By 1849, his address was Milton Street. In the Census (1851), he was enumerated as a ‘master spring knife cutler’, employing four men. In the 1850s, he seems to have moved to Hollis Croft/Edward Street, where he may have been the publican at the Woodman Inn, Edward Street. In 1861, he employed two men and a boy. By the 1870s, he was working and living again in Hollis Croft. Thomas Barnes, cutlery manufacturer, 269 Hollis Croft, died on 10 October 1882, aged 75. His wife, Sophia, died on 16 April 1888, aged 77. They were buried in Fulwood.
