Joseph Brammall (c.1776-1852) was a table knife manufacturer, who after 1816 was listed in directories at Norfolk Street. In 1799, he had married Ann Calverley. The family address was the same as the workplace in Norfolk Street, though by 1833 directories indicated that Joseph had a house at King Street, Pitsmoor. In 1837, Joseph was described as a table knife manufacturer and gardener. His wife, Ann, died ‘suddenly, on 22 May 1839, aged 61. Two years later, when he testified in a local court case, he stated that he was withdrawing from the business (Sheffield Independent, 20 February 1841). In 1849, the freehold of the properties, where Joseph was based (but did not apparently own), were offered for sale (Sheffield Independent, 26 May 1849). Joseph remained listed at that address – which fronted Norfolk Street and extended back to Sycamore Street – until 1852 (when his residence was at Eyre Street). He died on 28 February 1852, aged 76. The remains of Joseph and Ann were buried at St Paul’s churchyard.
