John Stephenson (1852-c.1904), who was born near Hull, operated a cutlery hire business in Paradise Street by the 1890s. It continued into the interwar years and branched into supplying cutlery canteens to retailers. During the War, John’s son, Alfred Mansell Stephenson (1901-1978), occupied Louvic Works, 44 Garden Street. Alfred made army jack knives with Lawrence Wilson. They parted in 1950. Alfred and his son, Derek, continued at Garden Street as directors of John Stephenson (Cutlers) Ltd (silverware) and Stephenson & Wilson Ltd (gift penknives and letter openers). In 1979, Derek sold the silverware business to John Price (see Arthur Price). Stephenson & Wilson was sold in 1992 to the long-serving Billiard family. It closed in 2005 and the name was acquired by Egginton.
