Short-lived with an obscure history, this firm apparently began as Kilner & Ramsden. It advertised in 1865. ‘Kilner’ may have been the John Kilner, who was later involved with Kilner Bros. William Ramsden was the other partner. Ramsden and Francis Bradshaw then formed Ramsden, Bradshaw & Co, butchers’ knife manufacturer in Cambridge Street, but this partnership was dissolved in February 1867. William Ramsden & Co advertised in the Sheffield directory in 1868. It was based at Albion Works, Cambridge Street, and manufactured (or factored) table cutlery, spear, butcher, cook, bread, and shoe knives. In the directory, a residential address is also given for the business at 37 Summer Street (off Mushroom Lane). However, by then William Ramsden, ‘cutler’ of 39 Summer Street, had died on 20 August 1867, aged only 27. He was buried in the General Cemetery.
The name ‘Ramsden & Co’ may have been acquired by Robinson & Oates. A company by that name was listed at 47 Eyre Lane in Kelly's Directory of the Engineering, Hardware & Metal Trades, 1934.
