According to the company, the establishment date was 1890. The owner was George Glossop, who was born in about 1863 in Harthill, Yorkshire, though little is known about his early years. By the late 1890s, George Glossop & Co was listed as a cutlery manufacturer and general merchant at Ellesmere Works, Arundel Street (with George Glossop living in Ellesmere Road). In the interwar period, the firm relocated to Howard Street and Westfield Terrace and broadened its products to include nickel silver stampings, silversmiths sundries, cut glass, cutlery, and electro-plate. George Glossop, Bannerdale Road, died on 30 January 1925, leaving £7,680. His obituary only mentioned his work as a Conservative Party supporter (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 5 February 1925). He was buried at Abbey Lane Cemetery. Later in that year, the business was registered as a limited company in Westfield Terrace, with £2,000 capital. The directors were George’s widow, Clara (c.1875-1954), daughter Bessie (1903-1996), son George Francis (1905-1996), and H. A. Hallas (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 23 November 1925). By the 1930s, Clara and George Francis managed the firm. Clara remained a director until her death on 1 April 1954, aged 79, leaving £2,685. George Glossop & Co Ltd was still listed in Westfield Terrace in the early 2000s, selling tableware and home furnishings.
