The Stamfords came from Hull. Edward Stamford was variously described as a builder, joiner, and timber manager. He married Anne and their son, Joseph, was born in 1840 in Hull. In 1861, the family lived in Gloucester Street, Sheffield, and Joseph was a table knife manager. In 1862, he advertised from White’s Cutlery Works, Porter Street, as a manufacturer of table, spear-point, butcher, palette, and cook knives. It was not listed again. Subsequent Census entries show Joseph continuing to work as a table cutlery manager. He later lived in Cuthbert Street and may have died in 1903, aged 63. He was buried at Wardsend Cemetery on 5 August.
