Edward South (1800-1885) was born in Sheffield, apparently the son of Francis (a cutler) and Sarah. Edward became a partner with Charles Holmes in South & Holmes, a table knife manufacturer. This ended in 1837. South was listed in 1841 as a table knife manufacturer in Fitzwilliam Street. Four years later he advertised in a local directory. By the 1870s, the output included spear, dagger, and hunting knives. Helped by his son, John, Edward South employed 38 workers in 1851, though that fell to less than ten after the 1850s. Edward South died on 4 July 1885, aged 76, and was buried in the General Cemetery. The table knife business (styled E. South & Co by the end of the 1890s) remained in Fitzwilliam Street until 1912, when it apparently ceased trading.
